The "Whispered Ah" is a vocal exercise often used in the Alexander Technique to promote better use of the voice and to encourage a more relaxed and efficient use of the body. Due to it's focus on vocal production, I feel it's often overlooked if that's not of specific interest. But there are also additional benefits that there is great value in exploring. Everyone can benefit from exploring the Whispered Ah.
Benefits of the Whispered Ah.
- Improved Breath Control: The Whispered Ah helps to develop better awareness and control of the breath, facilitating more efficient breathing patterns. This can be particularly beneficial for singers, actors, and public speakers, but is also beneficial for everyone as it helps reduce habitual interference in the breathing functioning, improving lung capacity.
- Release of Tension: By focusing on gentle and controlled vocalization, the whispered ah encourages the release of unnecessary tension in the throat, neck, and shoulders. This can lead to a more relaxed and natural use of the voice, but is also a common area that holds unnecessary tension as a general stress and emotional response.
- Calming Effect: The procedure helps calm your nervous system, reducing tension and stress. As a physiological response, long out breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system i.e. your resting state.
- Releases the Jaw Joint: Habitual clenching of the jaw and teeth grinding are very common behaviours that also encourages tension in the neck.
- Enhanced Vocal Quality: Practicing the whispered ah can lead to improvements in vocal quality, such as increased clarity and resonance. This exercise helps in developing a free and unforced voice.
- Coordination Between Breathing and Speaking: The whispered ah emphasizes the coordination between breathing and vocalization, fostering a smoother and more connected way of speaking.
- Prevention of Vocal Strain: Regular practice can help in preventing vocal strain by teaching more efficient ways of producing sound without exertion or force.
- Mindfulness and Presence: The whispered ah is often used as a mindfulness exercise, bringing attention to the present moment and enhancing the practitioner's ability to focus on the subtle details of their vocal and physical use.
Overall, the Whispered Ah is a versatile and effective exercise in the Alexander Technique, offering a range of benefits for both vocal and general physical well-being.
The Vocalised Ah
The Whispered Ah's lesser known sibling is the Vocalised Ah. Like the Whispered Ah, it also has benefits beyond vocal performance, and is a great way to help down regulate the nervous system further and free up the torso.
